MPA in Development Practice
Master of Public Administration in Development Practice (MPA-DP) Curriculum
During the school year, students undertake coursework in a wide range of disciplines and sectors. This classroom education is supplemented by a three-month professional summer field placement. The program's core courses teach students the skills and professional knowledge needed to effectively address ongoing sustainable development challenges.
Students must complete a minimum of 54 points (and a maximum of 72 points) to be considered for graduation.
- 30.5 points in the core curriculum, including two 0.25-point professional development courses
- 15 points of any combination of courses from the Sustainable Development Focus Areas
- 8.5 points (minimum) of electives
- 12 weeks professional summer placement

Students must complete at least 15 points of any combination of courses from the following Sustainable Development Focus Areas. Focus Areas are not formal designations (like MIA/MPA Concentrations); they are thematic niches around which students may opt to develop specific expertise. In addition to completing courses from Focus Areas, students must complete at least 8.5 points of electives. MPA-DP Graduation Requirements Overview
Students must meet the following requirements in order to be approved for graduation:
- Complete 54 credits in residence at SIPA
- Complete 4 residency units
- Complete all core requirements, including 15 points of any combination of courses from the Sustainable Development Focus Areas; 8.5 points of electives; and 12 weeks professional summer placement.
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
- Have no pending grades. All grades must be final. Any notations indicating a pending grade must be converted to a final grade prior to graduating. These include, “IN” (incomplete), “CP” (credit pending) and “YC” (year-long course).
- Complete and submit the Application for Degree or Certificate by the appropriate deadline.
In addition to the above please note that grade changes cannot be made post-graduation.

STEM Eligibility
Beginning with the MPA-DP class May 2022, students will be granted STEM eligibility upon graduation.
