Core Registration and Petitions

All students are strongly encouraged to consult their academic advisors before making any decisions regarding their Core registration. Registration for Core courses takes place online during the regular course registration periods.

Core Petitions

If students are unable to enroll in a section of Art Humanities, Contemporary Civilization, Frontiers of Science, Literature Humanities, or Music Humanities, they may file a Core petition online. The Core registration periods for the 2026-2027 academic year are:

  • Fall 2026: 12:00 a.m. EST, Tuesday, September 8 through 11:59 p.m. EST, Thursday, September 10
  • Spring 2027: 12:00 a.m. EST, Tuesday, January 19 through 11:59 p.m. EST, Thursday, January 21

The Core Petition Form will become available during the Fall and Spring petition period windows.

The last day to drop a Core class is the Friday of the second week of classes. Please visit the GS Academic Calendar for specific dates.

University Writing

Students are advised not to contact University Writing professors directly as sections cannot be modified by course instructors.

Literature Humanities and Contemporary Civilization

Students enrolled in Literature Humanities or Contemporary Civilization in the fall will have their registration automatically rolled over into the spring semester by the Registrar.

GS students may petition to enroll in Columbia College sections of Literature Humanities and Contemporary Civilization by writing to gsacademicaffairs@columbia.edu.

Students must take these courses sequentially. Students who have not successfully completed HUMA GS1001HUMA CC1001 and/or COCI GS1101COCI CC1101 will not be able to register for HUMA CC1002 and/or COCI CC1102.
