Advanced Master's Research (AMR) Specialization
Columbia Engineering recognizes the importance of research experience in the pursuit of a higher degree; obtaining significant research experience will enhance a student’s prospects for acceptance into competitive PhD programs. The Advanced Master’s Research (AMR) specialization is designed to allow students to deepen their research training and prepare them to pursue future PhD programs. The research experience gained through the AMR specialization will help support students' success on their academic journey to the next phase of advanced graduate research at the PhD level. Furthermore, the pursuit of new knowledge through research is central to the mission of Columbia Engineering, and the AMR specialization furthers that mission.
The Advanced Master’s Research (AMR) specialization allows MS students with previous graduate-level research experience, entering their final semester of studies, to deepen their research training and prepare them to pursue future PhD programs by extending their MS program to engage in research.
Students must be nominated by a Columbia Engineering faculty member and must be in good standing. Students admitted to AMR will be registered in the ENGI E4990 ADVANCED MASTER'S RESEARCH Advanced Master’s Research course in their final two semesters of studies (typically their AMR entry and AMR extension semesters). The credits earned from the ENGI E4990 ADVANCED MASTER'S RESEARCH course do not count towards the MS degree requirement and will not incur a tuition charge. However, students are responsible for the fees typically incurred by enrolling at the school. Students who wish to withdraw from the AMR specialization after their AMR entry semester will be required to submit a withdrawal request, resulting in a corresponding transcript notation.
