A Message from the Dean

Each year, Columbia engineers pursue a robust course of study of great depth and breadth, one that prepares them for a variety of pursuits in engineering and applied science, as well as many other fields and industries.

Columbia Engineering has a proud history of innovation that has made a profound impact on our daily lives. From mass production of antibiotics, New York City’s first subway line, and the earliest computer systems, our faculty and alumni have contributed technical breakthroughs that changed our world forever.

Today, we are equally committed to teaching, research, and translation that will better society and bring our engineering for humanity vision to life. Our students are a central part of this mission. Coming to Columbia Engineering means choosing a course of study that will broaden and deepen your knowledge, skills, and capacity. Combining technical prowess with courses in the liberal arts from Columbia’s Core prepares students to be 21st Century Engineers. You will learn to question, to investigate, and to think deeply about how technology intersects with society.
Our programs and courses cultivate students who will be leaders in whatever field they choose to pursue and make a contribution to their communities, to the nation, and to the world.
Here at Columbia, faculty and students work together, collaborating at the intersection of disciplines to address the most exciting and challenging questions of our time. With the help of staff, advisors, state-of-the-art facilities and labs, and countless resources, students receive the support they need to succeed.
I encourage all of you to pursue the many possibilities available to you here at Columbia in the City of New York.

With best wishes for the academic year,
